              SOBRIETY AND MENTAL HEALTH

Recovery from chemical or behavioral addictions is not about abstaining from certain chemicals or behaviors. It’s about learning to meet the needs we must fulfill in order to be mentally healthy.

THE FIVE BASIC NEEDS THAT DEFINE MENTAL HEALTH

     1.  Self-Esteem: our need to feel good about ourselves.

     2.  Others-Esteem: our need to have a few significant people have our back.

     3.  Emotional Security: our need to be a valued member of our tribe.

     4.  Material Security: our need for food, shelter, and money in our pocket.

     5.  Sexual Release: our need to propagate the human race.

To the degree that we cannot meet these needs in healthy ways, we are insane. Recovery is about restoring ourselves first to sobriety, and then to sanity.
